July 2026 – Crossing the Alps – Day 3: From the Fernsteinsee to Imst

Right now I'm sitting in my hotel room. My knees are freshly taped, the plasters on my feet changed, I've showered and rubbed myself down with alcohol rub and Voltaren. I'm pretty tired and will head out for something to eat in a moment.

Today was a truly exhausting day. I don't think I've ever experienced anything this challenging before – not just physically, but mentally too. Over a relatively short distance, the trail climbed more than 1,000 metres in altitude. There was no alternative: in the middle of the slope, the path only led upwards. Turning back was not an option. Once started, I had to see it through.

At some point I realised it was best not to look too far up. Don't take in the whole slope, just the next five metres. One step after another. That is exactly what worked today.

On top of that, I had to concentrate constantly. The path was often just a narrow track along the slope. Always paying attention not to trip over roots or take a wrong step. The real challenge, though, wasn't the path but the endless metres of ascent, which felt incredibly long over such a short distance.

At the top, I was rewarded for it. The view down into the valley was worth every effort. I was also particularly impressed by a waterfall in a gorge. A grated bridge led directly over it, while the cold, fresh air of the water rose up to meet you – a wonderful cool-down after the long climb.

In the end, the trail continued on to Imst. Now I'm looking forward to a good dinner and to letting the day wind down in peace.
